Belize Celebrates 28 Years of Independence
This month marks the 28th anniversary of Belize's independence from England making the change from being a Colony of British Honduras to an independent state. British Honduras officially changed its name to Belize in 1973, but it wasn't until September 21, 1981 that England recognized Belize as its own country. American Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton released the following statement today:As families gather across Belize to watch the flag being raised at midnight, they can be proud of their nation's vibrant democracy and commitment to enhancing security, protecting the environment, and creating opportunities across the region.
We send our best wishes on this occasion and hope our shared values and common interests continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship between our two nations.
It is traditional in Belize to start celebrating independence day at the beginning of September and continue until the 22nd, making it a 3 week party of parades, music and even a beauty queen pageant.
